Gedanken zum Sanctus

a song after the Preface, an indispensable part of the Eucharistic prayer. Nevertheless, like hit by liturgical to experiment, replaced by arbitrariness, cut down prayed for comfort or unloving. What does this song in the liturgy? How should one deal with him?

The Sanctus is one of the oldest parts of the Mass, and early core of the vocal repertoire. In manuscripts, we find the Gregorian chant to deliver we often without notes (Neum) handed down. A sign of good tradition, and widely disseminated. It is a two-part text, whose origins in Isaiah , a psalm verse and are Matthew . If the Church in the Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass sings the Sanctus, she comes to the mission of the church music in perfection by:
"They [the church music - note] must be on a meaningful association with the word in which the Logos spoken out added. "¹
we sing the Sanctus, for example, a choral exhibition, we experience the perfect harmony between the Word of God and music, between the singing of the earthly and heavenly Church, a moment of timeless beauty.

The Liturgical Institute of the German-speaking Switzerland puts it:
"In the early centuries, this reputation in the liturgies of the East (4th century) and West (5th century) part of the Eucharistic Prayer ".. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might are Heaven and earth with your glory" The hem of his garment in the vision of Isaiah filled the temple, God's presence is so exuberant that the temple to appear small to be filled out of it completely. His presence goes into quite different than merely human realms. In singing exceeds the man himself so he can in the Sanctus in the mighty song of the angels tune, calling to each other constantly, the holiness of God, that shook the doorsteps of the temple. Our song reached the here and now in the celebration of the liturgy present God. [...]

If the praying Church sings: "Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord", she expresses the fact that she eagerly awaits the return of Christ. The knowledge gathered for prayer, but that Christ is given to them in the Eucharist in the form of bread and wine into His body and blood. He comes into the "now" and links heaven and earth until he comes again "In the name of the Lord." ²

How many of our worshipers, this is really aware of? Not alone Had the Sanctus own catechesis, worth a detailed sermon? For example, on Palm Sunday, when the prayer for the blessing of palm branches from the singing of . "Hosanna Filio David" corresponds perfectly with this statement:
Almighty and eternal God, bless these branches, the symbol of life and of victory, with whom we worship Christ, our King, With songs of praise we join him in his holy city; grant that we may go through him to the heavenly Jerusalem, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever.

is above all to question, however, whether the frivolous replacing the Sanctustextes - the way, is clearly defined and literally, and not in spirit, as has sometimes apologetically claimed - the importance and uniqueness of the liturgical moment and the unity of the Eucharistic prayer, the essential part of this song, is not extremely harmful.

After the points that should roughly outline the depth and significance of this song, we should take a look at the documents of the Church. In the letter Redemptionis Sacramentum ³ we find the following statement:
"The people taking part but always active and never purely passive: to unite with the priest" in faith and in silence as also in the course of the Eucharistic prayer set slots, the answers are in the opening dialogue of the preface, the Sanctus , the acclamation after the consecration and the acclamation of Amen after Schlußdoxologie and others of the bishops' conference approved and the Holy See reconnoitred acclamations ""
But what is now recognized as the official text in Latin and German, this version shall prevail and shall publish in the missals.?
Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
But gray is all theory, as could be determined already in the first part of Goethe's Faust to Mephistopheles. And since we are on the right topic: The devil is in the details, here in respect of the "immemorial" the German song tradition in our country, unfortunately, extends to some weaker songs and the New Spiritual song that us with some questionable paraphrases pleased. Of abuse, any song by even the word "holy" appears, to sing instead of the Sanctus, to say nothing.

Sanctus A replacement is in accordance with the Episcopal Conference is not necessarily prohibited. It is simply a gray area. In such cases is always advised the following: we take a look into the Missal, and take the approved text and published there as a benchmark (see above). Because of the nearly exact citation of the word of God, one should refrain from too easily ready to lay hands on the Ordinary, and thus in the Sanctus. With a good catechesis on the background of this wonderful song and the last is clear that the fourth (in praise of God : third) stanza of "Adeste Fideles" not as Sanctus geeignet ist - und übrigens auch nicht das entsprechende Lied aus der Schubert-Messe.

why should we value the Sanctus, meditating his text and it gladly and regularly sing with the angels and archangels, the thrones and powers and with all the hosts of the heavenly host "singing to the high His divine glory.

But there are classics in this sense actually in the music? What exactly is classic in music?), The other open call for all if only the quality is. And already there - an aside - is sadly lacking at times impressive indeed. The third group has it easy: they must not specify style (and is therefore hardly any attack), but calls generally modern and contemporary image.

Time and again, then in the discussion the statement that the church indeed - thank God! - Have made no statement about the type and style of church music, and so yes anything is possible. Harald Schützeichel formulated
can "In principle, any music can be used within the service, from Gregorian chant to jazz. Of course there is music that is appropriate for worship and not very suitable. It is the quality. "¹
he reaps prompt opposition by the renowned Austrian liturgist Philipp Harnoncourt, incidentally, the brother of the renowned conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt. An opposition in the match no less a figure than Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, when he writes:
"In fact, music is supposed to serve the Christian liturgy, must follow the Logos, specifically: You must be a reasonable assignment to be the word in which the Logos has responded. It can be solved, as instrumental music, not from the inner direction of this word, which releases an infinite space, but also attracts distinctive lines. You must, by its very nature, andes than music to usher in rhythmic ecstasy, in the ecstatic stupor, in the sensual excitement [...] [...]."²
Apart from that I ask myself once more, why the word theologians Christ is always so hard on the tongue, raises the question of how to clarify these statements, indicating at first only a general direction. Here, too, to help further official ecclesiastical texts, in the German speaking and must be ignored on a regular basis:
"A Church of composition is the more religious and liturgical, the more it approaches in their investment, their spirit and their humor to the Gregorian chant and, conversely, it is even less of the temple worthy, as moving away from this model. The ancestral Gregorian chant should therefore be used in abundance at the scale of worship functions again.

all may be convinced that the church does not lose its luster, even if it is accompanied only by this type of music. In particular, we see to it that the Gregorian chant by the people re-established will, so that the faithful in the celebration of the praise of God and the holy mysteries back vivid position, as was the case earlier. "
These words are the Motu Proprio Tra le sollecitudini of St. Pope Pius X. taken from 1903. The quoted today as often as Vatican II large parts of this document, almost literally, and sets:
"The Church of the Gregorian chant regarded as that of the Roman liturgy singing; therefore he is liturgical in their actions, if indeed the same conditions exist to take the first place. "³
is certainly not meant that in future only Gregorian chant should be sung. But at least here is unambiguously confirmed that represents for the Church of the chorale and the elaborate polyphony, a key criterion for assessing the quality of church music compositions. This confirms the already cited Joseph Ratzinger once again, this time 2007, as Pope Benedict XVI. In his Apostolic Exhortation Sacramentum Caritatis :
"Finally, I would like, although I am aware of the different orientations and the very commendable different traditions that, according to the request of the Synod Fathers of the Gregorian chant is brought to the appropriate application, since this is the actual song the Roman liturgy. [...]

More generally, I ask that future priests are prepared at the time of the seminar on understanding the Mass in Latin and to celebrate and to use Latin texts and use the Gregorian chant. One should not overlook the possibility in mind that even the faithful are taught to know the most common prayers in Latin and to sing some parts of the liturgy in Gregorian style. See "
We, the Church is the musical development of vast space, but also sets clear limits. Or, to put it in Joseph Marx. "Not everything that sounds, is music"
We might add: "... and not everything that is music, is suitable as a church musician in the service of the liturgy." I would like to see more priests to rediscover again the language of the Church, and type of boundless self-expression vain Schrammel groups are not yet in a stage of the liturgy. The killer argument that there is no binding definition, is not to hold any event.

I have this issue in further contributions will still attempt to intensify.

Leider ist es notwendig, dafür etwas weiter auszuholen, and to present first the problem of polyphonic church music itself.

This sensitive issue will also one of the most unspeakable concoctions taken up a study guide of the German Bishops Conference, which I will dedicate another post, namely the study guide 194 "music in the church outside of the liturgy" (I would but already here on a very good comment from Dr. Michael Tunger point: LINK to the PDF document). In this "instrument" we read on page 9f. following: wanted
"The liturgical reform of Vatican II to promote the active participation of the whole community, so called for the role just Implementation of the liturgical celebration and allowed the liturgy in the vernacular languages. The traditional liturgical practice of polyphonic church music seems just put this in question: the listening community is not a holistic, active participation is possible and, where appropriate, is not the liturgical roles balanced. In addition, the majority of the community is ignorant of the Latin language.

dominated the liturgy of polyphonic church music, there is generally a risk that professional musicians, but also amateur and amateur ensembles singing exclusively draw in itself. Therefore recommends that the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments: "If the church music within a service is listed, they should adapt to its character. This often required to restrict the use of works that date from a period in which the active participation of the faithful has not seen as a source of true Christian spirit "(statement on" Concerts in Churches ", No. 6,. similar to already see No. 53 of Instruction on Music in the Sacred Liturgy "Musicam Sacram" in 1967).

"restriction" of traditional polyphonic church music within the liturgy, of course, must not be confused with their complete banishment. Here is a case-by case, a careful balancing is needed. Is certain: not since such works rarely cultural treasures of high rank, they must not be forgotten. If they find no suitable positioning within the liturgy more to offer, outside of worship, many attractive opportunities. "
Even this brief excerpt from the document cries out for a number of comments. I will not now constitute a systematic, but more or less after the brainstorming principle briefly touch on:
  1. The principle of active participation ( participatio actuosa ) is not a requirement of the Second Vatican Council, but was already enforced by St. Pope Pius X. In fact related to the restoration of. Gregorian chant (ie, the restitution of the chorale with reference to the old manuscripts as opposed to the then applicable Editio Medicaea , I will also address the issue again with my own contributions) and its propagation and promotion.

  2. The following sentence is pure suggestion: traditional church music, the active participation of the question. It is yet? does not it? Here screams of modernism even for self-affirmation. Up to the devastation of the conciliar church music that had its roots already added in some trends of the liturgical movement , was bothered by the obvious at this point no one. And Today we see people leave with tears in his eyes the church when a large orchestra was fair blossom the liturgy. We found typical of the post-conciliar reforms shortening the term activity to sing palpable You must either doing, or stand or kneel or lie on a circle around the altar so he liturgy is-live-bar. What nonsense! Also looking forward to pray, not listen, meditate, be amazed, are activities. And they are often essential for the liturgy, as every external activism. No wonder the Church has the hermits and it met with the adult monk level since early Christian times such high esteem.

  3. It follows that which had to follow. The conciliar standard argument: It is understood Latin but not a man! course. Is it perfect, right? The sentiment is so beautiful that I've thought about him paint with the calligraphy pen and selling in gold frame. There should be a huge market for it. But this argument is true anyway?
course not! Especially when the Latin Ordinary argument is not a true expression of pastoral concern, but a return to the Arugmentierenden even falling indictment. The text of the Ordinary (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) is common. Literally and for centuries. Who has the text in German read once confident and prayed several times for example at home, its contents will not be forgotten, and the key to understanding the Latin text easily. It's nigh absurd that we should sing no more Latin - but it Taizé songs in English, French, Russian, Hebrew, and English: Latin imports (?). Also on this subject more will be said.

  4. The rest of the quote above text is an insolence and mendacity that you should not really comment on everything. Traditional polyphonic church music is here under the general suspicion of Aliturgischem.
Where does it necessary powers and funds is no shortage of "
The Instruction on Music in the Liturgy," Musicam Sacram ", published by the Roman Congregation of Rites in 1967, highlights the qualitative importance of church music:
fourth a .) And only those music sacred music called that is made for the celebration of divine worship and as identified by the holiness and goodness of its forms

    b) the concept of sacred music come into consideration here: the Gregorian chant, the old and new polyphony in its various genres, Musica Sacra, which allowed for the organ and other instruments was created and the church Folk song, liturgical as the religious. The
Konzilskonsitution "Sacrosanctum Concilium" formulated in the 6th Chapter:
112th The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, distinguished from all other forms of artistic expression, especially because it is what lies at the connected with the sacred music and words is a necessary and integral part of the solemn liturgy. In fact, both the Scriptures as the Holy Fathers of the worship songs have donated high praise, as is the Roman popes in modern times in the wake of Saint Pius X. the ministerial function of sacred music in worship mit größerer Eindringlichkeit herausgestellt haben.

    116. Die Kirche betrachtet den Gregorianischen Choral als den der römischen Liturgie eigenen Singing; therefore he is liturgical in their actions, take if, moreover, are given the same conditions, the first place. Other types of sacred music, especially polyphony, are for the celebration of the Liturgy by no means impossible, if they meet the spirit of the liturgy within the meaning of Article 30.
Thus we see that the polyphony (ie, the polyphony) is excluded in the post-conciliar liturgy not, but still with a sense of the Gregorian chant is a guide to qualitative classification of liturgical music.

What is it but now with the Sanctus that are supposedly sung by the people must and therefore a popular lever to banish traditional mass compositions of the liturgy in the concert business? In the General Instruction of the Missal (AEM) says:
"55 b) Sanctus call. The whole community is united with the heavenly powers, sings or speaks the Sanctus This call is part of the Eucharistic Prayer and is of . all presented together with the priest "¹
in which - apart from the trade shows in the Ordinary Form in Latin - not yet final" basic order of the Roman Missal "(2002 GRM) is almost identical:
" 79 b) The acclamation: It unites the whole assembly with the celestial Powers and sings the Sanctus. . This acclamation, which is part of the Eucharistic prayer itself is, by all the people argued with the priest "is
Later in the document adopted this scheme a number of times:
" 147th [...] The Eucharistic Prayer requires ago by its very nature that it alone maintains the priest by virtue of his ordination. But the people united with the priest in faith with silence and by acclamation, as laid down in the course of the Eucharistic prayer, that the answers in the dialogue of the preface, the Sanctus, [...]"
"216th The preface by the principal celebrant alone sung or spoken, the Sanctus . But is sung by all the concelebrants together with the people and the Schola or spoken "
Obviously the situation is therefore quite clear: polyphonic mass compositions may be heard in the show but not the Sanctus, as this is the whole town is given up singing Interestingly.. this opinion to the council in our days have become the dominant, although it is compatible neither with the tradition, is still justified or somehow logically opens.

Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger said during a lecture in 1994, the adoption of his brother George as Director of Music of the Regensburg "Regensburg tradition and die Liturgiereform".

shows With all respect for the great liturgists of that word, that even experts can fall sharply next. Mistrust is first installed there where a large part of living history to the dustbin off taner misunderstandings to be thrown. This is particularly true for the Christian liturgy which thrives on the continuity and the internal unity of the history of believing prayer. "²
Later that very clearly defined and highly readable article refutes Ratzinger's statements Lengeling founded. He postulated even a completely different approach when it would "do well" to the congregation, before departing in the middle to remain the mystery for a while in silence filled. A silence in abundance, mind you, not a silent waiting. It is this silence is capable of uniting the whole community and real. Ratzinger further formulated
"Must not we just learn this silent inner pray with each other and with the angels and saints, the living and the dead, with Christ himself again, thus used formulas, the canon words are not, which will be in vain new by ever word assemblies try to replace, in for, as only the actual inner Abswesenheit ds event of the liturgy, looking to cover up the awakening of human speech at the touch of the eternal into it? "
Conclusion: It is always recommended that the whole congregation together the Ordinary, and thus also sings the Sanctus. For the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Missa Tridentina) the situation is slightly different and in any case clear. As for the post-conciliar liturgical reform, can unfortunately be no clear statement as to the relevant documents are vague and contradictory. In no case can be of a flat ban on polyphonic church music for the Sanctus assume, as I reference the documents of the Council and its predecessor - so to Pius X. have demonstrated - to be "Tra le sollecitudini" well-known clearly. This requires also by the fact that the Roman rite since Benedict XVI. two different forms knows that may be contradictory to such a crucial point is not diametrically opposed. Unless they wanted to postulate a "hermeneutics of rupture".

If the church choir so the next time sing a mass, and also takes over the Sanctus is the good Catholic tradition that we enjoy to your heart's desire and without remorse and inner party may:

Who would seriously claim that it is not such a wonderful piece of classical vocal polyphony, the souls may raise the song of praise with the angels and heavenly hosts?

Difficulty Breathing Feel Tired

Zeitgeist gegen Kirchenmusik - Ein Beispiel

On 26 September, Professor Markus Eham a lecture at the opening of "daily of new church music" of the Bavarian (arch) dioceses that HERE and HERE have already been discussed in this blog. From an attentive fellow readers, I was pointed to this speech, and I have downloaded and thoroughly read the text: PDF DOCUMENT .

Overall, this text is very interesting and contains many aspects that would be worth a look their own. Unfortunately, my time is too limited to afford it. So I would like to take comment on a few notable points from this lecture,.

Already on the first page goes Professor Eham beifallheischend heavy guns on
The liturgical tones 2007 Rome were heard here, not exactly sound for the future, but more steps to extraordinary cadenza on the 19th Back to the 16th century Century. Church Music was this ritual flashback but not specifically spelled out, the Motu proprio Summorum Pontificum and the papal accompanying letter contained not a word about the musical form of the extraordinary Meßritus - actually revealing consistently as singing and music in the pre-Vatican II view just does not contribute significantly to Liturgy belong.
Professor Markus Eham, who teaches at the University of Eichstätt including liturgy shows here from a strange Limited View, even from a long-vanquished "Los von Rom" setting, which may even be raising questions about his suitability as a university professor for this subject at a Catholic (!) University. First, the mere polemic against the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Missa Tridentina) no longer seems appropriate. Pope John Paul II In 1986 a commission of nine cardinals following two questions:
  • Pope Paul VI. prohibited or any other key authority in a legal way the wide celebration of the Tridentine Mass in the present?
The answer, of the nine cardinals was given was, "No, the Mass of Sts. Pius V has never been banned. "
  • Can any bishop any priest in good conscience forbid the celebration of the Tridentine Rite?
The nine cardinals joined in the fact that no bishop may forbid a Catholic priest to read the Tridentine mass.
in December died in 2007, Cardinal Stickler, a member of this Commission was reported, furthermore, that eight cardinals, and only one against it was to make it through a papal decree in public that every priest freely between the new and the old rite could choose. For the nine-member commission included Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Paul Augustin Cardinal Mayer, Silvio Cardinal Oddi, Alfons Maria Cardinal Stickler, Agostino Cardinal Casaroli, Bernardin Cardinal Gantin, Antonio Cardinal Innocenti, Pietro Cardinal Palazzini and Jozef Cardinal Tomko. ¹

since the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum the Tridentine Mass is now the Extraordinary Form of the Roman rite, and as such, for all priests (with minor limitations) enabled. Eham polemic misappropriates that the letter of Benedict XVI. 2007 represents only a reaction to the behavior of the bishops, the letter "Quattuor abhinc annos" from the pontificate of John Paul II completely ignored (see report by Thomas Kovacs HERE ).

One wonders what liturgy understanding the professor taught his students well - and how he can justify it, "multipliers" with such a limited Verständis may be released into the church service. The "flashback" in the 16th Century, which he suspects this is propaganda of the past. The "Old Mass" has long been another form of measurement has become.

The critical remark that the relation between church music in the Ordinary and the Extraordinary form is not clear (I have which yesterday touched in THIS ARTICLE ), but to take completely. It can not be that one and the same composition in both forms of a rite is assessed differently. In addition to the completely unresolved question of the calendar, I think this is one of the most pressing problems to address after the deadline specified in Summorum Pontificum three-year period and would discuss.

writes in a new paragraph Eham however, very beautiful for the role of church music after the Second Vatican Council:
Messiaen? ACDC? Hertel und Mross? Philip Glass? John Rutter? Bemerkenswert Hermeneutics is the break after the Council, the Eham postulated here in the next sentence the first time. The nebulous "requirements for the renewed liturgy" to be brought into play here. An often used phrase. But what exactly does a song is different to the offertory before the Council of a song for the offertory, after the Council? What is the difference between a pre-Vatican Conciliar the Agnus Dei?

The following paragraph is "Intermezzo: Bringing faith be heard" overwritten. Here the professor is initially in broad terms the position of the church 'as the dominant cultural medium, and even cultural pioneer past. I have to contradict him on two points. He writes:
  1. The performers of music in worship were mostly professionals, not musical amateurs.
  2. And the role that fell to the music in the liturgy, changed: It was always not so much in the setting of the biblical word give the common celebration of the liturgy itself aural expression, but one for personal worship-provoking, representative sound area to create for the ordinance, by the full-liturgical staff was fully drawn.
mistaken on both points Eham: never before, the training of church musicians stood on a higher level than in the academic teaching of our day - At least in the German and Anglo-American regions. As a vocal soloist or instrumental musicians at least have cantors major cities rely on excellent staff: enthusiastic amateurs, music schools, music students, professional musicians of all stripes. This argument can therefore contribute little to explain the change in church music after the Council. The second point I have already promoted again in other posts here complained of shortening the term activity to the physical action. Then I need hardly enter into any more detail.

In the next paragraph, entitled "Orientation to the past," the polemical attacks again violently around. I quote:
"To preserve in the care, the self, conceived of the church and its liturgy, then more and more as a special and alternative world for their presence for." Sacredness of the liturgical act of religious "expression," A corresponding "was required; Cecilian of the movement marked, this will be computed as a defining style for Ideal Standard, for the want of the Gregorian chant and polyphony Palestrina brand sponsor.

[...]

This attempt at a musical identity has to have the issue discussed later prepared for: Is there really the "music the church" as a stylistic repertoire determinable, oder müssten wir nicht richtiger von "Musik für den Gottesdienst der Kirche" sprechen, die der jeweiligen Zeit und Kultur entspricht?"
Inwiefern der Cäcilianismus römische Lehraussagen zum Thema Kirchenmusik beeinflusste, to be seen. Giuseppe Cardinal Sarto, who later became Pope Pius X., has not met for the first time in 1903 in Tra le sollecitudini concrete conclusions about church music, but much earlier as the patriarch of Venice, in pastoral letters to the termination of abuses, such as invasion of secular opera music in the worship urged. The remainder of this section Eham stresses again the need to create modern church music before he comes to the following statement:
"The theological and legal basis of this opening to the church music contemporaries can be summed up in a few guiding principles: it is' no kind of quality full religious to promote music of the liturgical celebrations 'excluded, which is capable of' prayer and to express the mystery of Christ: 'holder of the liturgy is' the whole community, with Christ the head, united body. " This calls for music that allows the active, full, conscious participation of all in the singing or hearing Mitvollziehen. "
This statement, based on the " third party based instruction for the proper implementation of Konsitution on the Sacred Liturgy " is in principle completely correct. It is interesting to note on the church law that is perceived here again but only selectively.

The following sections will continue to run. I can not for reasons of time, unfortunately, not much positive or respond to questioning. A statement from page 9 of the presentation, I would like to quote yet:
"I see two dangers in our worship area. The dullness of routine and the tendency to aesthetic mummification of the liturgy I suspect both strike or are related to a rampant Jesus oblivion in church and theology in favor of the ruling Christ in love. modern sacred music could, however, in its sensuous immediacy of an important voice expect to be revelation [...]"
I agree with Professor Eham in his assessment of the two Gefahren für die Liturgie vollkommen zu, schon die folgenden Sätze lassen mich aber einigermaßen ratlos zurück.

  • Der Bekennerruf "Mut zur neuen Music in the Church is not a plea bargain for pandering to the contemporary taste with the motto: ". We can also syncope and Major Chord" After what has been said that confusion would be really impossible [...] Then, as now it is So to work out that people of different backgrounds have a chance to come up with the message of faith in their own languages in contact. go really to the people of today, without performing the secularism of today [...]
work on the other conclusions is one thing to say, but I take an example, on those statements. First, we come here again to a striking contradiction within this lecture. Above nor a retreat of the church on the "My" complains is required here, not to be working in the secular world of today. This is of course the same thing in other words, apparently noticed Eham not. The basic skepticism before the pre-Vatican II period (after all, some 1900 years of church history ...), runs through the entire lecture, he adjusted the recognizable look.

It is true the statement that no style is excluded per se from the liturgical availability. But this is not a license for experiments of any kind in worship: both Sacrosantum Concilium and Musicam Sacram (and numerous other post-conciliar Schreiben) fordern unmissverständlich die Föderung und Pflege der Gregorianik, und erheben eben nicht die Form, sondern die einzigartige Wort-Ton-Verbindung und Zitattreue zum kirchenmusikalischen Idealbild.
Ganz im Gegenteil sage I [...]: 'Who is watching closely is probably assume that it is precisely in our time from the inspiration of faith out important works of art both in the area of \u200b\u200bthe image as in the field of music (and in the literature) are Created and . arise Even today, the joy in God and the contact with his presence in the liturgy an inexhaustible power of inspiration. The artists, who submit to this order need not be true as a rear guard of the culture to understand [...]'. Not return to the past, I call it taking measurements show the great principles of the basic shape of liturgical art [...]"

Insgesamt ein eher schwacher Vortrag, of mainly typical of the post-conciliar theology Herumgeeiere suffers the tradition. It becomes clear over here laid down a fraction, the theological - has long since healed, and endure only to improve and fill - not yet practical. Propagated by Professor Eham theological thinking is no longer sustainable and is caught in the order-to-Self groups one come across the boundaries of modernism. We must not let occasional concessions to conservative listeners of this paper deceived about the true state of mind.

Birth Control Dry Heaves

Antisemitismus in den Improperien?

Granted, it's not quite the right time, a few weeks before Christmas once again fall back on Good Friday. But some issues are just a perennial favorite. In particular, the discussion about the Catholic Church and its alleged anti-Semitism, which is kept alive only by certain interest to you. As a church musician

is it an honor and a pleasure to help shape appropriate to the liturgical year in my service to communities, and through the music tone be some-what to the naked word alone may can not be said enough.

Every year I care, however, already weeks before the Good Friday across a song that spoils the joy of Easter something. No, not the song itself, but rather the inevitable discussion about who ordered as either breaks out on Holy Thursday, or the cantor haunting immediately after the Good Friday liturgy. We are talking about the Improperia .

The Improperia, Latin allegations, complaints are words put together in alternating song from events of the Old Testament and the Passion of Christ, in a way analogous to the later crossroads , the Savior will be placed on the cross in the mouth . Your Origin is probably in the Mozarabic liturgy. They are sung in an ancient Gregorian melody, which is recorded but only the 1474 Roman Missal. An exception is the liturgy of the Sistine Chapel, where they are singing since 1560 in a fauxbourdon processing of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. The usual praise of God with us eingedeutschte version (GL 206) is the Gregorian to strongly - and not without its problems - reduced.

The transfer of the Latin text reads:

My people have what I done to you, I'm only making
have you?
Answer me.

from slavery in Egypt habe ich dich herausgeführt.
Du aber bereitest das Kreuz deinem Erlöser.
Heiliger Gott.
Heiliger, starker Gott.
Heiliger, starker, unsterblicher Gott, erbarme dich unser.

und pierced with a lance thy Redeemer the page.

your sake I have beaten
Egypt and its firstborn
but you have beaten me and handed down the death.
  • A: My people ...

I've brought out of Egypt and Pharaoh
can sink in the Red Sea,
you but I handed the chief priests.
  • A: My people ...

I have set before thee blazed a path through the sea, but you have
opened by a lance my page.
  • A: My people ...

In a pillar of cloud, I am pulled forward to you, but you have me
brought before the tribunal of Pilate.
  • A: My people ...

I have fed thee with manna in the desert, but
you got me in the face
and castigated me.
  • A: My people ...

I gave you to drink water from the rock and saved you, but you have
impregnated me with gall and vinegar.
  • A: My people ...

your sake I struck the kings of Canaan,
you hit me but with a tube on my head.
  • A: My people ...

I gave you a royal scepter in hand, but you
hast crowned with a crown of thorns.
  • A: My people ...

I raised up and equipped with great power, but you
me higher on the wood of the cross.
  • A: My people ...

At first glance, quite an anti-Semitic interpretation is possible, and it should not be forgotten that it is in the course of church history certainly come to such a "Eisegese. Understandably, being built on this and the background of recent German history, a certain uneasiness in the consideration of this text. A member of Schola, which I have passed years ago, refused to very involved with the reference to a Benedictine monastery that this song was completely abolished, as "obsolete" anti-Semitic tones in the liturgy were.

Now one can certainly attest to these sisters a good will - but a devastating lack of theological knowledge like this. Who will judge this song may not stand still on Good Friday, but must be the entire work of Christ, and especially remember the days from Palm Sunday to the resurrection also.

Are the Improperia a reproach to the synagogue? Or even to the Jews living today? Absolutely not! Who wants to celebrate Easter, bear in mind, why the atoning death of Jesus took upon himself. The doctrine of the atoning death of Christ goes back to Paul, but is then absorbed first by Augustine, who developed the doctrine of original sin:

Adam, the forefather of mankind has turned away from God by sin. Since then, the sin between God and man. One can say that sin is the deliberate avoidance of a greater good, by the Creator, towards the lower right, the creation. The dance around the golden calf in the Old Testament, then clearly the symbol of this trend. In order to expiate the guilt of humanity, must offer to God his own son as a sacrifice for mankind would not be able to Burden of their sins to bear alone. This first very difficult "Satisfaktionslehre" developed by Anselm of Canterbury in detail. We recently were able to do that even had the president of the German Bishops' Conference his hands full, to explain the death of Christ. It was not simply a "solidarity" dying "with us", but a dying " for us." What a difference! Bad that bishops apparently no longer in a position to explain the very basics of our faith.

If we therefore take into account this background, and consider which texts shape the liturgy of the Easter Vigil, we must be reasonable, that with "my people" not the time or the Jews living today were meant. But we are all meant.

is particularly evident, when we ¹ Improperia with the Old Testament texts of the Easter Vigil and the response read Psalms to speak, "Praise the Lord, O my soul, O Lord my God, how great thou art!" - "You, Lord, give me the portion and my cup, You hold my fate in your hands." - "I sing a song to the Lord, for He is Exalted" - "I praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me from the depth and does not let my enemies triumph over me."

The Psalms speak not in the Man form, but I myself am before the Lord and thank him for his kindness. The Church of Christ singing the praises of the eternal God. Directly in front of the Prayer be struck, a bridge between the saving acts of God in the Old Testament, the sacrifice of Christ and thus the fulfillment of the promise in the New Testament. At the same time this prayer also offers a summary of my previous remarks:
Lord our God, through the writings of the Old and New Testaments you lead us into the mystery of this holy night. Open our eyes to the work of Thy mercy and grace of this gift to us through the Easter Vigil, the firm confidence that our life in your Glory is completed.
the actions of the Saviour on the Cross are not only to the people of Israel or Jews in general terms, but they stand in the tradition of the prophets who warned the people in view of the saving acts of God, to conversion and penance (see, for B. Micah 6 or Isaiah 5). Further evidence is found in songs like "O head, covered with blood and wounds" (GL 179, 4 and 5), where the whole question of sin, atonement and redemption is expressed:
What have you, Lord, endures Everything is my burden.
I, I'm indebted to endure what you have. [...]

I thank you from my heart, O Jesus, dearest friend,

eradicate the discussion on dance in worship, which have unfortunately experienced by the ongoing liturgical abuses in the pontificate of John Paul II's constant buoyancy. 1975 was the Roman Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments a document entitled "Liturgical Dance", in which she clarified:
dance can be made in any form an integral part of liturgical celebrations. For a very unholy and sacrilegious element would be introduced into the liturgy, and that would create a secular atmosphere for all participants and attendees to worldly places and situations should remember.
In 1998 the same congregation to the Bishop of Honolulu to ban hula dances in liturgical contexts, which were in Hawaii long ago entered the liturgy. But when John Paul beatified 1995 by Father Damien DeVeuster, the famous saint of the lepers of Hawaii, traveled to Brussels, was performed at a central point of the ceremony, a hula dance.

In 2002, John Paul II was in Mexico for the beatification of two martyrs of the Mayan people. On that occasion the papal Zeremoniar Archbishop Piero Marini various dances integrated into the liturgy. At the end was a sort of cleansing ceremony called "Limpia" performed by the dancers who appeared with incense bowls and the Pope and other cardinals and bishops present sprinkled with herbs. This ritual is used to cure physical and mental illness by driving out evil spirits. In fact, the Pope was exorcised so before the eyes of the public in a pagan ritual. Understandably, there was behind sharp protest from both Mexico and the Vatican circles. Archbishop Marini certainly saw no reason to change his questionable Inkulturationspolitik.

The adoption of foreign elements into the liturgy of the Church does have a tradition dating back to the early church. However, here are carefully and prudently proceed. The brief examples above show that one in dealing with strange rites can not be too careful.

Now we come to the dance in the liturgy, especially in the holy mass. This question was a constant point of contention between John Paul II and the then-prefect Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger faith as this is was open. Ratzinger wrote in his book "The Spirit of the Liturgy of the following dance: The dance
is no expression of Christian liturgy. Gnostic-docetic circles around him in the 3rd introduce into the liturgy century attempted. For them, the Crucifixion only Certificate: Christ had left the body he never really adopted before the Passion, and so could take the place of the Cross liturgy of the dance, because the cross was indeed been a sham. The ritual dances of the different religions have different directions - spells, analogy magic, mystical ecstasy -, none of these figures corresponds to the inner direction of the Liturgy of the Word-like "victim.

is completely absurd it, if in trying to make the liturgy "attractive", dance pantomimes - to be inserted, which then often lead (rightly from their investment ago) in applause - perhaps by professional dance groups.

Wherever applause for making human breaks in the liturgy, this is a sure sign that the essence of the liturgy completely lost and replaced by a kind of religious entertainment has meant. Such appeal does not last long; on the market of leisure activities, which increasingly forms of religion involves as a thrill, the competition is not to exist.

I have seen how the act of repentance was replaced by a dance presentation, found the course very well received, one could of what repentance really is, remove next? Liturgy can only attract people when they do not look at himself, but in God, and if they enter it and can act. Marco writes
Dania in the book "La danza sacra nella chiesa" (Rome, 2000) on the spread of the liturgical dance straight from Pentecostal, Protestant circles in the liturgy of the Catholic church (I assume a translation Heinz-Lothar Barth):
These experiences bring, however, lose the risk, the sacramental dimension of faith from the view, show a certain narcissism and are the fruit of a solipsistic (to themselves fixed) behavior.
Although the rejection of dance in the liturgy of the Church is clear and the danger of the uncritical and arbitrary insertion of foreign elements has been demonstrated in the liturgy, offer numerous katholische Bildungshäuser und andere Kursanbieter nach wie vor Ausbildungen für liturgischen Tanz an.

Wer von jeglichen "modernen" Anwandlungen in Schocktherapie geheilt werden would like, once the service visit the "World Day of Women". Silly can public "Group Hug" hardly fail ...

own observations and numerous discussions with colleagues in church music and theology is clear for me the image that the desire for greater physical expression in the show from always the same direction is: Feminist movements, New Age and the spread cult of Eastern religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and yoga. Especially the latter, often mistaken for a gym can be very dangerous because the underlying world and of man is not completely compatible with Catholic faith. At this underestimated threat some would say, but this does not belong to the topic of this blog.

A look at the Internet reveals interesting. The homepage of the "Christian dance AG e. V." find a daily pulse:
I demand from the dance - more than all the other arts - that he reveal the divine in man.
The quote is from Murshida Kamae A. Miller, a Scottish representative of Sufism. In a course description of the house of Clara cell top it says:
"Liturgical Dance" - this term means above all to dance NEW SPIRITUAL SONGS . However, it has its place not only in the liturgical context, but wherever there are people ein Bedürfnis ist, ihre Lebenssituationen und Glaubensvorstellungen mit der Sprache ihres ganzen Körpers zum Ausdruck zu bringen.

First we see the scene in the 2nd Samuel at verse 5:
They placed the ark of God upon a new cart and brought them so Abinadab from home, which stood on a hill, Usa and Ahio, sons Abinadab, directed the new car [Then they took them out of the Abinadab house that stood on the hill], with the ark of God and Ahio went before the ark. David and all Israel danced and sang before the Lord with all your devotion and played on dulcimers, harps and drums, rattles and cymbals.
say something later, then at the same point: As we reported

Anyone who is confronted with the demand for dance in worship should be aware of the religious views on the subject, and to look very carefully, especially the background and motivations of the more demanding. All too quick to debunk the representatives of the liturgical dance itself - and often is the desire to dance the door to more subjective desires. The liturgy is not a block box, from which one can choose at will (even if, unfortunately, gives even the Missal since the Council that impression in many places). Let
live the word of Christ in you richly teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, in psalms and hymns and spiritual Songs, singing with grace in your hearts. - Apostle Paul's letter to the Colossians
